Title:
Be quiet! Pure Power 12M (modular) + GPU with 3x8-pin — right cable?

Message:

Hello everyone,

I'm building my PC and have a question about the power supply and GPU connection.

My setup:

  • PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 750W (modular, ATX 3.0)
  • GPU: Radeon with 3x 8-pin PCIe power connectors

Situation:

The PSU came with a single PCIe cable, which has a 12-pin connector on the PSU side and splits to 2 x 6+2-pin (8-pin) on the GPU side . This means I can only power two of the three GPU connectors.

On the PSU itself I see the following modular ports:

  • 1× PCIe (12-pin)
  • 1× PCIe 5.1 (600W / 12VHPWR)
  • 2x P8 (CPU/EPS)
  • 24-pin ATX for the motherboard
  • SATA/Drives connections

Currently I'm using the PCIe port for the included cable (2x8-pin to GPU), but that leaves one 8-pin on the GPU .

My questions:

  1. Do I need an extra cable to properly power the third 8-pin?
  2. If so, which cable exactly is suitable for this PSU?
  3. Can the PCIe 5.1 (600W) port be used with a cable to 8-pin PCIe?

I want to connect this safely and according to the specifications and would prefer not to use Molex/SATA adapters.

If needed, I can add pictures of the PSU and cables.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

youre going to have the best experience finding a PSU that has the 3 cables coming from it (meant for PCIE connectivity) Even if you could find a adapter vrom 12vhp to pcie 6+2pin it would be another point of failure. My recommendation is getting one with enough wattage and enough cables. the megekko website does show you how many pcie 6+2 connections a psu has.

Your GPU asks for 3 PCIE cables because every cable is designed for 150W power delivery.
Most likely, you have a 7900X or a 9070XT. These cards use on average just over 300W. Therefore it is advised to use 3 cables.
However, it will not break if you only use 2. Just don't try to overclock the card and you'll be fine.

If you would like to change your PSU, I would recommend the successor of the 12M: Be Quiet! Pure Power 13M 750W
This PSU has 4 PCIE connectors and also a 12V2x6 for possible future upgrades.
